Nailing

I find the needle nose to very effective in forming the toe leather neatly. Grab the leather about the width of the nose away from the nail, and simply rotate the pliers, pull tight and press them against the previous nail.

Use a second pair of needle nose to set the next nail, and tap it in. This technique also works around the heel.
When the entire perimeter is nailed, go round with the hammer and gently tap any bulges in the leather, getting it all as flat as possible.

The back edge of the hammer is handy for flattening close to the nails.

An alternate method is to press the the leather flat with the tip of the needle nose. You want to make the whole surface as flat as possible.
Lace them up at this point to pull the upper as tight to the last as possible.
